An estimated 620,747 people were displaced due to the conflict in Gedeo (SNNP region) and West Guji (Oromia region) in 2018 and 2019.
Following the displacement and call of Government's plan, UNHCR, and IOM to address internal displacement in the two administrative zones ANE responded to the humanitarian needs in 2018 and 2019. In an urgent and quick manner ANE provided humanitarian assistance in 2019 in areas of shelter assistance, basic NFIs support, school children support with school materials, provision of potable water supply, damaged public infrastructures rehabilitation, and provision of institutional and staff capacity building training.
Shelter Construction and Infrastructure Rehabilitation
In 2019, with the generous support of UNHCR, 850 shelters constructed for returnees in West Guji and the Gedeo Zone. In addition, 10 health facilities, schools, community centers were rehabilitated for returnees and host community use. 2 milling grinding machines were also installed to avail flour-grinding mill services to West Guji and Gedeo vulnerable returnees and host communities. The UNHCR also supported the rehabilitation of water well (1) in the Gedeo Zone.
Potable Water Supply and Provision of Hygiene Kits
With the grant support from IOM Ethiopia, 12 water wells were rehabilitated, and 84 communities WASH committee were trained who supposed to manage the rehabilitated water schemes. In addition, different types of hygiene kits like jerry cans (2,984), washing basins (1,490) and bars of soap (14,900) provided to 1,490 returnee households. 1,962 dignity kits which contain hygiene and sanitary items were provided to returnee women and girls to provide psychosocial and physical wellbeing of women and girls in the returnee population.
In an effort to reduce water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) -related diseases in returnees’ population ANE trained 77 hygiene promoters and they were provided participatory hygiene promotion educations and sensitization campaigns to raise awareness and ensure the hygiene and sanitation messages create a lasting impact for the 56,683 returnee community.
